Pursuing a Career of Service, Discipline, and Integrity
For Aldo Cortez, earning his Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from
Odessa College is more than a milestone, it’s a step toward the career he has envisioned
since childhood.
Growing up, Aldo often traveled with his family to Mexico to visit relatives. Each
trip included crossing the border, where he watched U.S. Customs and Border Protection
officers work with professionalism, confidence, and respect. Their sharp uniforms
and strong presence left a lasting impression. “They looked professional in their
uniforms and were professional in their interactions with the people who were crossing,”
he recalled. That early experience planted the seed for his future in criminal justice.
While at OC, Aldo immersed himself fully in the field. He served on the Student Patrol
with the Odessa College Police Department and was active in OC Crime Stoppers, gaining
hands-on experience in campus safety and community engagement. As part of his degree
program, he also completed an internship with the Ector County Sheriff’s Office, where
he rotated through various departments. “I learned and experienced something new from
all of their departments and the officers and staff I worked with,” he said.
These opportunities strengthened not only his knowledge of the law, but also his communication
skills and confidence. “OC has helped me develop my confidence in my English-speaking
skills and in myself. I also have had to do interviews, which will help me in the
future as I pursue my career in criminal justice.”
Aldo’s post-graduation plan is clear: he plans to apply to U.S. Customs and Border
Protection. If not accepted immediately, his Plan B is just as strong: continuing
in OC’s Bachelor’s Degree Program in Criminal Justice while continuing to reapply
to the agency. His determination is steady, and his commitment to serving and protecting
others remains his driving force.
“Being disciplined, communicating with people, and helping others, those are all things
that fit perfectly in criminal justice,” Aldo said. “My experience at OC has shown
me that I’ve chosen the right career for me.”
Odessa College is proud of Aldo and his dedication to pursuing a career built on integrity,
service, and professionalism. Wherever he goes next, one thing is certain: he is ready.
