For Ruth Watson, Odessa College isn’t just a place to earn a degree — it’s where she discovered her purpose, built her career, and grew into the person she is today.

“OC has been a cornerstone in my family,” Ruth shared. “My dad got his certification in Electrical Technology here, my mother and sister took classes here, and I have been a student here as well.”

Ruth’s story with OC began when she was just 18. Fresh out of high school, she planned to take some time off. But her father had a different idea.

“I was resting on the couch, thinking I’d kick back for a while,” she recalled. “But my dad walked in, loaded me up in his truck, and said, ‘You are going to OC, and they are registering today. You aren’t going to just sit around and do nothing.’”

And just like that, her journey began — one that would shape not only her future, but the futures of countless children she would go on to teach.

While taking classes at OC, Ruth started working at a local childcare facility and discovered a deep love for working with children. After being let go from that position, a friend told her about a job opening at OC’s own Children’s Center. Ruth applied, got the job, and found her home — beginning a 25-year (and counting) career dedicated to nurturing young lives on campus.

“I love children and I love teaching them,” she said. “I learned how to love kids at whatever level they are. I love knowing that I had a part in giving them a good foundation for their lives.”

In 2006, Ruth returned to school with a new mission: to earn her associate degree in Early Childhood Education. After completing that goal, she pushed even further — and today, she proudly graduates with her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.

“I want to continue being a teacher,” she said. “I love seeing the kids grow and seeing them ‘get it’ when they learn something new. I want to continue being a part of giving children the stability they need for their future. That’s important.”

Reflecting on her years at Odessa College, Ruth said, “I have literally grown up here at OC — I have learned life lessons here.”

When asked what her father, who passed away eight years ago, would think about her completing her degree, Ruth’s eyes welled with tears.

“He would be so proud of me,” she said softly.

From a determined teenager who didn’t plan to enroll, to a beloved teacher and graduate who’s touched countless lives, Ruth Watson’s story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of believing in others — and yourself.

She didn’t just attend OC. She became part of its heart.
