Biology

The Biology program prepares students with the fundamental biological skills and knowledge required to transfer to another program or institution by providing students with a strong foundation in the study of life through the observation of evolution, structure and function, information flow including information exchange and storage, pathways and transformations of energy and matter, and systems at the microscopic and macroscopic levels.

Mission

The mission of the Biology program is to provide a strong foundation in biological skills and knowledge through which students learn the concepts, techniques, and language to enable them to think critically and apply their knowledge of biological sciences to problems and concerns facing our society.

The Biology program of study provides the courses to meet the requirements for the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree with a concentration in Biology. In addition to meeting the A.S. degree requirements, these courses may be transferred into a bachelor’s level program leading to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in the biological sciences.

Our curriculum emphasizes the understanding of biological sciences, including competency in:

  • the ability to apply the process of science
  • the ability to use quantitative reasoning
  • the ability to use modeling and simulation
  • the ability to tap into the interdisciplinary nature of science
  • the ability to communicate and collaborate with other disciplines
  • the ability to understand the relationship between science and society
