Siria Colchado’s journey to graduation is a story of resilience, sacrifice, and steady determination. Now earning her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching (ECET EC–3 program) from Odessa College, Siria has turned years of challenges into a clear path toward becoming an educator.
A first-generation college student, Siria immigrated to the United States from Mexico at the age of 15 after her parents made the decision to pursue better opportunities for their family. Soon after arriving, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their lives, and her father was laid off. Despite the financial and emotional strain, Siria remained focused on her education.
Adapting to a new country while navigating a language barrier and limited resources was no small challenge. Without access to a computer or reliable internet at home, Siria still managed to excel academically, maintaining straight A’s through determination and resourcefulness.
Growing up on a ranch in Mexico helped shape her strong work ethic. From an early age, she learned the value of discipline, responsibility, and perseverance, qualities that would later carry her through difficult moments in her academic journey.
Initially, Siria dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. However, she soon realized that path was not financially feasible. Undeterred, she chose a new direction and enrolled at Odessa College, even though she did not yet speak English.
Determined to succeed, Siria found creative ways to learn the language. She turned to music, especially songs by George Strait, to help her improve her English. Over time, her hard work paid off. She not only strengthened her language skills but also grew in confidence and academic ability.
Through her coursework, Siria discovered a passion for teaching. Today, she serves as an instructional aide at Noel Elementary, where she is already making an impact in the classroom. She is actively preparing for her Early Childhood–3 certification exam, with the goal of becoming a second-grade teacher on the same campus.
Siria plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree, which will allow her to mentor other educators and open the door to greater opportunities within her career.
Throughout her journey, Siria has maintained a positive outlook, choosing to learn from every challenge she has faced. Her story reflects not only personal perseverance but also the lasting impact of opportunity, hard work, and a commitment to growth.
As she graduates, Siria Colchado is not only achieving a milestone for herself, she is paving the way for future generations.
