Odessa, TX — Odessa College is pleased to announce a compelling new exhibit by Lubbock-based artist Devin Ratheal titled Mnemic Waves, which will be on display at the Phillips Goff Gallery in Sedate Hall from January 13 to February 19, 2025. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
Ratheal, whose work fuses the timeless aesthetics of Renaissance and Baroque paintings with the modern complexities of digital distortion, invites viewers to explore themes of political, ecological, and autobiographical significance through his oil paintings on canvas and wood.
In his Artist Statement, Ratheal elaborates: “My current oil paintings on canvas and wood explore digital distortions of Renaissance and Baroque paintings as a means of confronting the associations they evoke today, as well as contorting them into metaphors for political, ecological, and autobiographical themes.”
Ratheal will be present for an Artist Talk on January 31 at 11 AM at the Saulsbury Conference Center, located in the Electronics Technology Building on the OC campus. Following the talk, guests are invited to a Gallery Reception at the Phillips Goff Gallery, where they can engage with the artist and explore the exhibit further.
A 2021 MFA graduate in Painting from Texas Tech University, Ratheal has exhibited across the United States and is known for his distinct approach to combining classical techniques with contemporary visual languages. His works, often painted on wood, offer a meditation on the limits of representation and the tension between human-made symbols and the material world, inviting us to reflect on our relationship with the nonhuman environment.
