ENROLLMENT IS OPEN!

A fast growing medical career, with emphasis on rehabilitation and long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population.  This course will deliver the curriculum of Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC), and as with all our healthcare program emphasis will be placed on compassionate care.

The course provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting, and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety.

Clinical rotation provides a health-related, work-based, learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the instructor. Students are assigned clinical hours on Saturdays and Sundays, usually over 2 weekends, in a long term care facility and must complete 40 hours of practice.

The clinical rotation is facility dependent in accordance to their operating hours and schedule. Both weekdays and weekends may be required for clinical attendance. The Health Careers Director will meet with the instructor, and class if needed, to discuss clinical site location.

Course Prerequisite: Complio Account

Course Recommendation: Electronic Device with access to the Internet

*Students may participate in a Simulation Lab in lieu of direct Long Term Care (LTC) clinicals as a result of COVID-19 or other declared emergency. Determination will be at the direction of the State of Texas Department of Health and Human Services.

Students must pass the classroom portion of the program in order to participate in clinical. Students must complete both classroom and clinical portions of the program to sit for the Texas Nurse Aide exam.

On completion of the program, students will schedule their final written and skills exam which is administered by Prometric. The examination fee, $125.00, is included in the program tuition. The Texas Nurse Aide exam is a program requirement and may serve as a final exam.

A digital certificate of completion will be issued into Complio after the student attempts the Texas Nurse Aide exam.

What do I need prior to the first day of class?

Students need to access their Blackboard account prior to the first day if possible.

During the first week of class you will be sized and receive your scrubs soon thereafter. Our programs require students to wear Galaxy Blue scrubs to class and clinical. Come by the Gregory D. Williams Hall located at 2714 Robertson Ave and try on available sample sizes before completing your size selection in Complio.

I have completed or am about to complete the CNA course. How do I register to take my State Exam and where can I test?

After your course concludes, a documentation review process is completed by Odessa College before students are verified to test. This process can take up to 2 weeks. All course related items must be complete, including Complio and account balances. When the documentation review has concluded, students information will be submitted to Prometric for authorization to test.

Starting Fall 2022, your instructor will help you schedule the Texas Nurse Aide Exam for CNA students. Once students receive their SMT email all scheduling will need to be through Prometric directly but instructors will assist you where they can.

An email to schedule the Texas Nurse Aide exam will be sent to students and come from "SMT Notice" with a subject line that says "App registered Nurse Aide TX Application for Certification (TXCNA)." On occasion the SMT email will end up in the spam or junk folder; please check this folder. Select the application tab after you login and complete the "Application" process. The student will receive two more emails to schedule the written and skills exam after completing the application. Students are encouraged to schedule both the written and skills exams on the same date even though the times appear to overlap.

Odessa College is a Prometric test site however other test locations are available regionally. Both the written and skills test will be administered in the Health Sciences Building on the 2nd Floor Classrooms. Please refer to the campus map in the Resources section at the bottom of this web page. The written exam is held in the HSB 224 Computer Lab. The Skills portion is held in the CNA Classroom, HSB 222.

The Texas Nurse Aide Exam is being administered by Prometric. Please visit the Candidate Resources section of their website for the candidate information bulletin, registration and scheduling, and resources to prepare for the exam. Please visit the Prometric website for more information or contact them directly at 1-800-488-5787, email at txcna@prometric.com

If an event is canceled due to weather, candidates will receive an email from Prometric to sign in and reschedule without a fee.

You can find forms and information on the in-service requirement at the links below.

Forms 5506-NAR & 5528-NAR can be found at https://www.hhs.texas.gov/doing-business-hhs/licensing-credentialing-regulation/credentialing/nurse-aide-registry/nar-forms

In-service - https://hhs.texas.gov/nar-cbts or https://hhs.texas.gov/nar-approved-inservice

Non-Texas Nurse Aide's wishing to work in in the state need to "Request for Entry on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry Through Reciprocity" by completing form 5505-NAR and submitting the supplemental information to the Nurse Aide Registry. These forms are available on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry website.

If you took a CNA class but didn't sit for your Texas Nurse Aide Exam within 2 years of completing the class you must retake the course. Exam vouchers are only good for 1 year from date of purchase.
