To the OC Family:
Once again, Odessa College is proud to support United Way of Odessa with its annual campaign. I sincerely believe in supporting those in our community who need and require assistance. Your generosity may help one of our own students succeed in completing a degree, or help a single mother with daycare as she struggles to make ends meet, or provide food and other basic essentials for families in need. I'd like to point out that ninety-seven cents of every dollar donated stays in Ector County.
The focus of United Way of Odessa is to improve our local community by finding solutions to pressing issues and needs. Thanks to your support, the United Way is able to invest in 33 local programs and support 20 agencies that produce life-changing results. It supports people in Odessa: our children, our families who may be in crises and others whose needs would not be met – if not for YOU.
Our community continues to grow at an amazing pace, and with this growth comes opportunities and challenges. In the midst of a boom there are still many of our fellow citizens who need help, and, the United Way of Odessa needs our help to effectively support the increased needs of our community. While this economic boom has been good for our economy, it is also leading to increased rent and housing costs; the less affluent in our community are frequently displaced. Additionally, the brisk economy may mean there are numerous jobs available, but it also means there are fewer daycare spaces available for minimum wage workers. People still need help from their neighbors. Paul Newman, actor and philanthropist, said “I respect generosity in people, and I respect it in companies too. I don’t look at it as philanthropy; I see it as an investment in the community.”
