President’s report:

Senator Jordan announced that this was his last meeting and that he would be taking another position in Iraan as of the fall semester. He will still teach scheduled fall classes and reports that his program will be discontinued at OC at the end of the fall semester. President Jordan was presented with a gift certificate from Amazon.com in appreciation of his tenure as President this past year.

Old Business

Smoking Policy – President Jordan advised that the administration has decided to defer this decision for one year.

Parking Policy - Parking tickets have been increased to $10.00.

New Business

Faculty tuition for classes – Senator Rogers brings this from her constituents. The new Senate will have to take this issue to Dr. Williams.

Tegrity and ownership issues - David Carson and Dr. Athyala visited with the Senate about this software that captures the classroom by both audio and visual means. It is marketed as a retention tool as well as a way for students to have access to the class at any and all times. Concerns discussed by Senators included whether or not students would use it; what implications it would have for class attendance; the possibility of its eventual replacement of faculty altogether; and if classes are “mass produced” by OC, would there be any compensation to the faculty member who developed it? Dr. Athyala agreed to poll faculty about some of theses issues and also advises that she is researching other institutions’ policies. Faculty can see additional information about the product and its functions at http://www.tegrity.com/

Outstanding Faculty/innovative Teaching Awards - Senators discussed the low response rate among faculty for these nominations. At one time OC had students make nominations and the next faculty Senate will discuss that possibility.

Other

President Jordan requested that Senator Hellinghausen send ballots to constituents of Cosmetology, Law Enforcement and Culinary Arts to determine who will replace Senator Schwende for the last year of his term, as he is the new Senate President.

Senators discussed the annual retirement reception. It was suggested that the new Senate look into transferring the Faculty Senate Faculty Retirement event to the OC social committee so the retirement reception is for all retirees, not just faculty. This would allow every retiree to be acknowledged as the event would be sponsored by OC as a whole, not just the Senate.
