Grants & Scholarships

Grants are monetary awards that the student does not have to repay.

To apply for these grants, you must complete the FAFSA and have a declared major. If you should drop a class or withdraw from school, a repayment of some or all of your grant(s) may be required.

Odessa College awards more than $150,000 each year in academic scholarships.

Scholarships have varying academic and residency requirements and do not have to be repaid. A list of available scholarships is available from Student Financial Services.

Federal Pell Grant

...is a federally funded program for undergraduate students obtaining their first bachelor's degree. Funds are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and who meet federal eligibility requirements. The award amount is based on expected family contribution, the cost of education at OC and the number of hours enrolled. Students enrolled less than half time may qualify. Pell is the foundation of financial aid and serves as the starting point in the aid process.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

...is a federally funded program established to help students with exceptional need. The amount received may vary depending on availability of funds and documented need. A student must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours.

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG)

...is for students with financial need and is designed to assist students in enrolling and remaining in college. Full-time students are given priority consideration for funds. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours.

TEXAS Grant

The Texas Grant is for Texas high school graduates who completed the recommended or distinguished curriculum and graduated from high school within the past 16 months. Applicants must be entering freshmen, demonstrate need through the FAFSA and enroll in at least nine credit hours.

TEXAS Grant — Hardships or Other Proper Causes

A student has the right to submit an appeal to receive their TEXAS grant. The request must be submitted in writing and must explain the reason for the request. Reasons that may be considered include:

  • Showing of a severe illness or other debilitating condition that may affect academic performance
  • An indication that the student is responsible for the care of a sick, injured, or needy person and that the student’s provision of care may affect academic performance
  • The student requires less then 9 hours to complete their degree plan

A financial aid advisor or administrator will respond to the request through the student’s OC email account or regular mail. Supporting documentation may be required. A copy of all correspondences will be placed in the student’s financial aid file. Submitting an appeal does not guarantee any adjustments can or will be made.

Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) - Formerly TEXAS Grant II

The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant is for Texas residents who are entering freshmen, demonstrate need through the FAFSA, have an EFC of 2000 or less and enroll in at least six credit hours.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is for students who are US citizens enrolled full time. Must have graduated recommended or distinguished from high school. For more info click here.

Institutional Scholarships

include the OC academic, LM Adair, Leland Croft, Davidson, Hext, Parker Endowment, Property Deposit, Slaton-Bassett and Trigger Vance Phillips scholarships. Awards vary from $300 to $900 per semester; students should apply to Student Financial Services.

Departmental Scholarships

...are offered each year through the art, social studies, music, nursing, photography, diesel and OSHA departments. Art and music scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance, merit, skill or ability. Among these are the recently established Larry Gatlin Scholarship and the Hazel Rich Scholarship for music students. Interested students should contact the department chair for information and application requirements. Athletic scholarships are awarded each year in baseball, basketball, golf, softball, athletic training, cheerleading, cross country, dance team and rodeo. Athletes should contact the athletic director for details.

Non-Institutional Scholarships

...are available from off-campus individuals and organizations. Student Financial Services does not select or award these scholarships but does provide copies of applications to the organization. The Permian Honor Scholarship awards $700 per semester for four consecutive semesters. Applications are available from area high school counselors. Other scholarships include the Noel Scholarship for children of Huntsman employees, and the Ector County Employee Enrichment Fund Scholarship. Valedictorians of Texas high schools are eligible for tuition exemption for both long semesters following graduation.
