Dr. Mark Jordan ~ ENGL 2311: Technical Writing

Quiz on Chapters One through Six:

This is an open-book quiz. (Hint: It is keyed to my summaries of these chapters. You can go to the Chapter Summaries link.) To submit the quiz, simply number your answers to match the questions, then send me your answers as email to markwjordan@earthlink.net . You should probably compose your answers in your word processor. Then either copy and paste them into an email message, or send them as an attached file, whichever you prefer. If you send your answers as an attached file, you must save the file in the RTF format to prevent transmitting viruses. You must also use this filename: Yourinitialsq1 (example: jzdq1, meaning John Z. Doe, Quiz One). Otherwise I will not accept your file. On this quiz, the only formatting I am interested in for your answers is that they be properly numbered, and that your quiz shows your name for proper identification. If you do not know how to save in Rich Text Format, here are brief instructions:

  1. Select "Save As" or the comparable command on your system.
  2. You should see a window with various options. In MSWord, look toward the bottom of the window and locate the "Save as Type" box. Other word processing software is probably similar.
  3. Click on the triangle in that box to see various saving format options.
  4. Scroll down until you find Rich Text. Select that one by clicking on it.
  5. Name your file as I instructed above, and save it. It should now save as Rich Text.
  6. As for attaching the file, you should already know how to do that; if not, ask me.

In answering the individual questions, please use one or two complete sentences per question. Please do not repeat every detail from my "Chapter Summaries" sections, but rather I want you to show your understanding by concisely summarizing each answer. Each question will be worth ten points in your quiz grade.

Below are the questions. Try to limit yourself to one or two sentences for each question:

  1. Is technical writing more than just "information transfer?" If so, what?
  2. What are the four key issues in trying to bridge the practical and rhetorical demands of technical writing?
  3. Name the three types of documents, in terms of what level audience they are written for.
  4. Explain how it is that every document is, to some extent, persuasive in purpose. Give an example of how a document which is apparently purely informative still has a persuasive aspect to it.
  5. Name the five constraints which affect a writer's efforts to persuade the reader.
  6. How is plagiarism a breach of ethics?
  7. Is it possible to be absolutely objective and rational, not letting personal values influence our actions whatwoever? Why or why not?
  8. Name the three keys to ethical workplace behavior.
  9. Name the three kinds of abuse which can take place in collaborative work.
  10. Name the six stages of "active listening."

Your quiz is due Tuesday, August 31st.
