English 1302 - Composition and Literature

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The principal genres of literature – fiction, poetry, and drama – are studied, along with the techniques of research. Emphasis is on analysis of literary elements and the particular qualities that differentiate the three genres. Analytical expository papers on literature, a research project, supplementary readings, and examinations are required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of English 1302 are to acquaint the student with the characteristics, terminology, and elements of fiction, poetry, and drama; to give the student criteria for evaluation of the readings; to teach the student basic literary research techniques, and to teach the student techniques of writing critical and analytical essays about literature.

Kennedy, X.J. and Dana Gioia. Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and

Drama. Tenth Edition. New York: Pearson Education, Inc., 2005.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Do careful reading of selected literature; most works will require more than one

reading.

Write ONE analytical paper with research components.

Take THREE examinations and a comprehensive final examination.

Participate in class discussion board and submit study questions.

GRADING CRITERIA AND VALUE OF COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

UNIT EXAMS = 50%

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS/DISCUSSION BOARD = 10%

UNIT WRITINGS/RESEARCH = 20%

FINAL EXAM = 20%

TOTAL POINTS = 100%

 

 

 

 

 

EXAMINATIONS:

A unit examination will follow the completion of each of the units: drama, poetry, and short stories. At the conclusion of the course, a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAMINATION over literature concepts and terms (objective and essay) will be given in addition to material over drama, poetry, and short stories.

 

GRADING POLICY:

Unless arrangements have been made previously, I do not accept late assignments (essays or tests. All "emergencies" will require proof – doctor’s note, evidence of a death in the family, etc. These must be presented immediately along with the submission of the paper or arrangements of an exam.

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

You will need a computer with speakers and an internet connection available to you for this course. You will need Microsoft Word and possibly Quick Time or Windows Media. These are available through free downloads on the internet. You will be listening to audio information along with power points and lectures.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Cheating is not tolerated for any reason in this course. Generally, cheating comes in the form of plagiarism on your papers. However, cheating on a test or quiz is not acceptable either. Remember! Do not use anyone else’s words or ideas without clearly acknowledging the source, including a complete citation of the original work.

Penalties for cheating or plagiarism in connection with an academic program at a campus are listed in your campus policies handbook.
