TEXT: Medical Terminology,
A Word-Building Approach 6th edition, by Jane
Rice;
Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2008;
ISBN 0-13-222531-X
This textbook is really
nice, with explicit pictures of certain medical conditions AND an audio glossary
on the CD. Be sure to take advantage of this feature.
You can find out
information about your book and even order one online by going to www.odessacollegebookstore.com
This is a web course and we will utilize technology for communication, delivery of assignments, and
on-line testing. Communication is required through your
college e-mail account. If you have any trouble with that
account call or email Angela Tombs at 432/335-6714 or
atombs@odessa.edu
OR
Patrick Cannady at 432/335-6615 or
pcannady@odessa.edu. I check email
daily Mon. - Friday a.m., except on school holidays and will
respond within 24 hrs Mon. - Thurs. to your email.
Please remember to sign your name in your email as I may not
recognize your email address. If you don't get a
response from me, assume that I didn't get it and email
again or call. I have listed my office phone number
which has voice mail in case you are not near a computer and have an emergency.
When phoning, leave your full name, phone number and brief comment on your needs.
Please speak clearly when leaving a message and repeat your
number. I
will return the call as soon as possible.
GRADING
Each assignment has a
specific due date. See assignments page for due dates. You must submit the assignment no later than Sunday at midnight of
the date listed (on the assignments page) to receive credit, or a grade of zero will be
recorded. This means that you can turn the assignment in
anytime until that Sunday........as long as I have it by
Sunday night.
The assignments and
their due dates are listed on the "assignments" page.
The "wordlist" page is a
table of all the material you should study from each chapter in the Medical
Terminology textbook. The boxes on the "wordlist" page are set up by test.
For example the box that says Med Term Test 1 lists the words and pages that you
need to study, by chapter, for the first test. The box that says Med Term
Test 2 lists the words and pages that you need to study, by chapter, for the
second test,...and so on. Once you have studied the vocabulary, you can
take the med term test. The test are open from
Sunday to Sunday so you have a week to take the
exam. If you miss an exam for any reason you
will have no grade for that test. If you do
not complete the test within the 60 minute
time-frame, you will have no grade for that test. Therefore it
is wise to NOT wait until the last minute to take
the test. You do not have to submit any work from the
textbook, just the tests that are on the Internet (on Blackboard). Click
on the "tests" page and follow the directions from there.
TO TAKE A TEST, YOU MUST LOG ON TO BLACKBOARD!!!!!!!!
HERE ARE THE DIRECTIONS TO FOLLOW:
1.
Go to http://www.odessa.edu
2.
Click on "blackboard" in the upper right hand
corner.
3.
Enter your first initial and last initial followed
by your college ID# without the leading zeros.
For example, if your name is John Doe and ID# is
00001234 then your login is "jd1234."
4.
Enter your password which is "oc" and the last four digits
of your social security number.
5
.
When you have prepared to take a test, click on
the Assignments button in Blackboard. (This will list
an icon for the tests.)
6.
Click on the icon for the specific test.
7.
Please be advised that each test will be timed and that you have only one
chance to complete the assignment. Once you click on the icon, you are
committed to completing the task.
If you have difficulty using WebAdvisor or Registration
(with/for any class) call Data Processing & Colleague
Services at 335-6642.
Delivery of assignments will be accomplished by clicking on the "submit" button at the end of each
test. It will ask you if you are sure you want to submit the test. Please make sure that you have completed each section to your
satisfaction. There is NO NEED to save
questions or save the test. This happens
automatically and clicking the save button has
no
function on these tests.
Also,
the tests will have a time limit of one hour, so it is important that
you are well-prepared before you begin taking the test.
If you take longer than the allotted time to take the test,
then your grade will be a zero. I will give you a two
minute grace period to account for the time from your
submitting the test until the program records your
submission. You are
NOT
to use your textbook for the test. If you know the material, the tests will
be easy. Also,
you will not be able to use your textbook on the final exam, which is 50% of
your grade, so you should approach each test on the Internet as you would a test
that you take in the classroom. If you rely on your book to complete the test, you will
have an extremely difficult time with the final exam.
In addition to the time limit on
the tests, it is important to know that Spelling Counts.
If your answer is
misspelled, it will be counted as incorrect. In medical terminology, a
difference in one letter can make a difference in the meaning of the term.....SO
spelling is imperative to obtain credit.
Additionally, using aol
as a browser may lead to some difficulties when you go to Blackboard to take
your tests. You can get online with aol, but you should then
minimize it and use a different browser. Try using netscape. You can
download a copy (free) from the internet. Click on the FAQs (Frequently
Asked Questions) button to learn how.
The final exam will be comprehensive and will be
matching, and fill in the blank. The exam will
be given on paper (not the Internet.) All
you will need is a #2 pencil and a picture ID
(OC ID card or driver's license.)
The final exam will be
given at Odessa College on
Monday
April 28th, Tuesday April 29th, Wednesday
April 30th, Thursday
May 1st, and Friday
May 2nd in the Testing
Center.
These are the only dates you may take the exam (NO EXCEPTIONS.)
Please
note that the final exam is scheduled the week BEFORE your other final
exams.
The Testing Center is located in room 203 in the Student Union Building
(SUB) 432/335-6620. They are open Monday - Thursday
8:00am - 4:00pm and Friday 8:00am - 1:00pm. Keep in mind that you will
be allowed 1 1/2 hours to take
your final exam and will not be
allowed to take a test if less than 1 1/2 hours
remain before the testing center closes.
That is, you will not be allowed to take the
test if you arrive at or after 2:30 M-Th or
11:30 on Friday. If you are unable to take the exam at Odessa College you may take
the exam at a university, junior college, or high school in your town.
It is your
responsibility to make these arrangements and you must send me the name of the institution
and contact person, the mailing address, and telephone number.
You'll need to send
this information to me no later than
April 1, 2008. Use of the facility will be
at my discretion. Additionally, The
Pecos Technical Center will no longer administer exams for web students, so if
you were thinking of taking your final exam there, you will need to find another
proctor.
On the main menu,
you will find a button labeled FYI (for your information) that will
take you to a page providing pertinent updates on assignments etc
.
You should plan
to visit this page at least once a week or more. Should we encounter any problems with
e-mail, change of due dates, additional assignments, or anything else, this page will keep
you posted. I also may find websites that I would like you to visit for questions on the
test. This will be the way I communicate this information to you. Should you encounter any
problems, feel free to contact me via e-mail, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
GRIEVANCES: Odessa College
policy requires that student grievances first be discussed with the instructor involved.
Unresolved issues may then be discussed with the instructors supervisor.
